But the real threat to their future comes from the overfishing. The government in Senegal has little power to alter the situation: the fishing agreements it has signed in recent years with the European Union, worth around Pound Sterling 13 million for 1995 and 1996, are a vital source of foreign currency. Without these funds, the country would soon be bankrupt, unable to service even the interest on its foreign loans. This is of little consolation to the fishermen of Senegal. Once the fish have gone, there will be nothing for the people of Kayar and the thousands like them. |
