reportage Inside the dolls' house
These photographs were taken at an institution for handicapped women in the town of Brandys nad Labem in Central Bohemia, not far from Prague. The inmates of the settlement will never have their own children. Some of the women are mentally disturbed; others are abandoned old women. A few of the inmates are blind. The home was originally set up for blind girls by the Catholic Church at the beginning of the 20 th century but this was abandoned after 1948 when the Communist Party took power in Czechoslovakia. During the communist era, the institute became a very impersonal place where mainly disturbed women were placed.
